Police taking bribes from road side vendors

Everyday I observe couple of police personnels (from a constable to senior officers) coming and asking for money from vendors sitting opposite to forum mall, Koramangala near @home showroom. This episode is not one time activity. The Police people take multiple rounds to collect money from these vendors. I am not understanding why these police are wearing the uniform instead they can opt for begging at traffic junctions .. They might end up earning much better. This is a very sorry scene which many have to see every evening and police are also shameless enough.
Can we rely upon these beggars aka police to protect us. I believe not.
