Ripped off by traffic police

Reported on May 28, 2013 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #34586

Today, at around 11.30 am, I was driving at Goregoan East, when I was stopped by the police at Aarey Check Naka.

First the traffic police guy asked me for the RC. Showed him that.
He next asked me to lower the wind shield and then checked if the windshield had any screen; thankfully there wasn't.
Next, he asked for my license. I showed him that.
Next, he asked for insurance. I showed him that.
Next, he asked for PUC (Pollution certificate). Unfortunately, it had expired on May 5th. Since a PUC van was hardly about 100 meters away from this spot, I and my friend suggested that we would get it done right away.

However, the police man was very rude, and gave us the following choices: 1) Deposit my license with him, take the slip and appear in the court to pay the fine of 1500 or 2) Pay him 500 on the spot; he was unwilling to lower this amount saying that Rs.100/- bribe was for jumping signal.

It was very clear from the beginning that the intent of the policemen stationed over there was to extort money, may be they had to meet some month-end quota, and not really do any meaningful public service. I paid up, but made a mental note to post this on this site so that if at all anyone can make a change, he can take notice and teach some little things like self respect and shame to these policemen, who probably don't realize that citizens like me also pay huge taxes every month which reaches them in the form of their salary.

What's your reaction?
