Shillong, March 8 (IANS) Three persons, including a minor were killed, and 38 were injured, when a pick up jeep overturned in a remote village in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district, police said on Wednesday.

The victims were proceeding from Mawknor village to Saipung village to attend a free eye check-up camp.

"Two women Rophina Paslein, Kalbina Pakem and a five-year-old girl Laipynhunlangki Lamurong died on the spot when the overcrowded pick up jeep overturned at Khahnar village," district police chief Spill Thamar told IANS.

Thamar said the 38 injured persons have been shifted to a Saipung Public Health Centre for immediate medical treatment.

Khahnar is about 45 km from Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills and 150 km from here.

Talking to IANS, a local elder from Mawknor village said: "The stepmotherly treatment of the state government towards us by not providing us good roads was the main cause of the accident."
