Kolkata, Oct 18 (IANS) Electricity company CESC is planning to roll out its automated meter reading (AMR) devices to cover five lakh consumers in the city in the coming 12 months, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka said on Sunday.

"Presently around 25,000 consumers out of a 30 lakh consumer base are covered under the AMRs. In the coming 12 months, it will be extended to cover five lakh consumers," he said.

The group owns the city-based power firm.

AMRs are computer aided meter reading devices which reads the meter and transmits the reading electronically to the billing system in the company's headquarters.

This process results in an error-free meter reading based on which the billing is done.

Goenka said this will help the company in having tamper-free meters.
