Aizawl, Jan 16 (IANS) Women have once again outnumbered men in Mizoram's electoral rolls, Assistant Chief Electoral Officer Malsawmzuala said here on Tuesday.

"Women voters outnumber men by 16,573. Of the total 759,519 voters, as many as 388,046 are women and 371,473 men," Malsawmzuala said.

He said the final electoral rolls were published on Monday in eight districts with January 1, 2018, as qualifying date for age eligibility.

Malsawmzuala said the number of women voters was higher than men for the past many decades despite the fact that Mizoram is a patriarchal society.

The officer said an increase of 1.96 per cent had been recorded in the number of voters after summary revision of lists for four and a half months as per Election Commission instructions.

The highest increase of 2.37 per cent was in Mamit district along the Bangladesh-Tripura border followed by Aizawl district with 2.11 per cent.

The new voter lists would be used assembly elections due in November for the 40-member house.

With a total population of 1,091,014 (2011 census) Mizoram, currently ruled by the Congress, is a Christian-majority state bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh.
