Dd not pay a bribe - Faced no problems
We bought a house in Belgaum two years ago. Everybody including the lawyer tolkd us that WE HAD TO PAY A bribe. Even at the office the person giving the registrar the papers etc said that the Registrar HAD to be given a bribe - and we SHOULD give at least some small amount of few hundreds. We said that we did not want to give a bribe and since all our papers were in order did not understand what the need was. We also said we wanted reciepts for every payment made. THe reaction of everybody whom we said this to was that we were crazy - the bribe had to be paid or we would be given the run around.
The registration was done exactly in the same amount of time that it was done for everybody else - and apart from incredulity we faced nothing further from the staff (and our own lawyer and cantonment auhtoriites) in the Belgaum registration office.
