Did pay a bribe, probably ruined my future....
I went to the Mumbai CID office for passport verification letter and after checking and accepting all my documents, they issued me a letter and told me to take it to my local police station. I took the letter to my local police station and the officer there asked me if this is my immigration related and I said yes. He said if I would like to expedite the process I need to pay extra money. I said I am okay paying the premium fees if I get a receipt. He said it is not an official amount and if I don't pay, he doesn't know when my file will be processed. He also said the police has to come to my place for verification and he can't say at what time period I should expect them and if I am not home, he will mark on my report that I don't stay at the address proof. He further threatened that probably no verification will take place if my file will be lost. He asked me to pay Rs 700 and I said I am jobless and I can't afford to pay anything. I asked if I can get a confirmation that I submitted all my documents and the letter from CID there and he said he won't give me anything. Before leaving, teary eyed, I humbly requested him to please not block my file. He didn't say anything. I need this report sooner for my immigration purposes but I see no hope of ever getting it because I ********** off a police officer by not paying him a bribe. This immigration means a lot to me and my career, along with escaping from a country where police who is supposed to protect you, actually threatens you and asks for a bribe. It's sad... very sad.
I don't want to complain to his senior as I am sure his seniors and all are the same. A couple of years ago, some other officer in the same station charged Rs 4,000 as bribe from my dad to just lodge a NC or else he wouldn't file the complaint. Here is the perfect example of harassing the victims and protecting the criminals.
