FAKE "ANTI PIRACY COPS" RAID MY OFFICE

Reported on March 22, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #32292

Some days ago, a bunch of men came to my office claiming to be "Anti Piracy Cops" stating that they were raiding us on a 'tipoff' that we had downloaded illegal music and videos etc on our computers.
The men moved all our staff and began "searching" the machines for songs and videos. Of course, every machine in the world has some music on it. These "cops" claimed they had a mandate from "XYZ" Music and Video co- a name that I had never heard in my life. But they had a whole booklet with songs and movie names etc and a "letter" authorising them to inspect.
More, they claimed to have the "permission" of the local police station. According to them, they did not need any sort of "warrant" as the law (they showed me some section that stated that they were allowed to raid and seize. They had a policeman from the local police station in tow. When I asked him for his ID he refuese to give it.
I did not allow these people to search my machines. In turn they called the local police station and soon my office had 1 API, two SI and 3-4 Constables teeming around. It was daunting. The API "ordered" that we should allow the people access.
I asked the API to give me in writing that he is authorising this so called "raid" on my premises and that is when they began to back down. Seeing that we are not relenting to their intimidations, they soon left, prominsing to be back soon with all the proper papers.
I learnt the following day that this was a scam being conducted by a few people in collusion with the local police station. It is easy to get intimidated by all this show of "official sanctions" and finding music and movies on your PC (a very common thing among everyone), they then threaten to seize all the machines and also send the operators and the boss to jail. They then "settle" for some sums of money- reportedly anything between 25000-few lacs- to let you off.
Everyone beware of this organised scam between no good bums colluding with local police.
I was saved because I refused to buckle down to the show of power by the cops in my office.
