I will drive a cycle, but never pay a bribe.

Reported on November 29, 2010 from Varanasi , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #32621

I wanted to get a driving license, so I asked my friend how he got it, he took me to a person who promised to help me. I thought this guy would help me in the legal way but he takes me and my friend to a tea stall outside the RTO office where he introduces us to a RTO employee. I showed him my age and address proof. He then calls someone and asks him to bring some form. After a while a man shows up with a form. Then the RTO guy asked me to give Rs. 600 now and to pay Rs. 600 when the license is ready. My friend had checked the maximum expense for getting a license earlier and told me that it would not go above Rs. 300. So I understood that this guy is asking for a bribe straightforward. So I refused to give him and went straight to the RTO counter where the forms where being distributed. As I was entering I saw on the entrance gate that it was written,"Do not give money or proofs to third parties for making license." But to my surprise, as soon as I stepped into the line at the counter, a guy comes to me and tells me that he can help me get the license in ONE DAY by paying something to him! I asked if he is a worker at the RTO, and he said yes, so I asked him to show his id card, to which he says, "what difference id card makes, i will make some money and people inside will make some money." And he continued to say that if I didn't go through a third party I will never be able to a get a license.
I got so ********** off that I scolded him and came back home and took a decision that I will drive a cycle, but never pay a bribe to get a license.
