Immigration stamp on passport scam

Reported on July 18, 2015 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #62813

I was leaving for London, (I am NRI with British passport) by British Airways flight from IGIA on night of 14th July. When I came up to the immigration official, he scanned my passport and asked me the date I had arrived in India. When I gave him the date of my arrival, he said that there was no record of my entry into India in their system. I told him that my passport had been stamped by the official, and showed him the stamp. (The stamp was too light, and you could not clearly see the full date.) He said that the stamp was not legible. I told him that since the immigration officials were the ones stamping the passport and entering the date details in the system, I really did not know what I could do. He asked me to wait 10 minutes till he went inside. He came back and asked me how many dollars I have. I told him that I was going to UK and did not have any dollars. He then asked for 50 Pounds. I told him to get his superior. He told me to wait for one hour as his superior was not there. I thought I was going to miss my flight, so I went to another immigration agent and started asking questions. They then came and asked me to leave.

I think this is a scam which is planned at several levels. I don't think that the light stamp was a coincidence.
