Reported on May 10, 2014 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #40894

I was travelling with my family (wife, a two-year old son, mother and father) that day. Only me, my wife and my son had a first AC reservation, but my parents were on waiting list (but had a reservation in the standard sleeper class). So I asked the TC at Kurla if there were any vacancies in First AC so that we could be together - he said there were, assigned us the seats and asked me to bring my parents along. So far so good - I began moving my parents. I confirmed that the I will be paying the full fare for my parents as stipulated in the rules and i was ready with the cash (around Rs 6000). Once I paid the cash - the TC kept insisting that we pay more "as there was another party who is ready to pay him anything to get the seats". My father has been a government scientist (a nuclear scientist from BARC) and so he simply said it directly to the TC that "he is not comfortable paying the bribe". To this the TC - though unhappy, simply accepted the required amount and even returned back the small change (Rs 100). I would like to think that the TC must have been ashamed to ask a bribe from an older more educated person - and must have learnt his lesson! Well - I am trying to be positive here - but for all we know there are stubborn bribe-collectors all over India who are so shameless that they even take bribes for issuing death certificates.
