My son and I were called one morning to appear at a police station in Surat along with a person who would vouch for us for completion of police verification for our passports. At the completion of the process I got up to leave along with my son and our two friends. As we moved out of the police station my son told me that the police personnel had asked that he be paid any amount that we deem fit for fulfilling the requirement. In the presence of my friends I replied that I had not heard the request, jokingly saying that such demands or requests fall usually on my deaf ear!
Several months passed and we were called by our two friends to appear with them at the same police station for their police verification process. The same police personnel was on duty that morning. After completion of the formalities of verification my friend peeled out Rs 500 from his purse and handed it over to the policeman. I was flabbergasted by his action. I did not even hear a demand or request from the police personnel.
On leaving the station I berated my friends for handing out money were no demand was raised. More so when they were witness to the previous occasion when no payment was offered. They proffered the excuse that it is customary to offer a payment even if no demand is made as they may find themselves in front of the same police personnel under different circumstances!
So much for following an example!!
