Police officer shamed into not demanding bribe

Reported on March 7, 2011 from Noida , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #32466

Some years ago the police officer in-charge of passport verification called my son, who had earlier applied for a passport, to the police station asking him to produce the relevant original documents and provide photocopies. At my son's insistence I accompanied him to the police station. The officer checked the documents, they were perfect. He then requested me for some "Kharcha pani". I asked him whether he had actually spent some money on the case which he now wanted me to reimburse to him. When he kept quiet, I said, "So you are demanding a bribe! No one has so far in my 54 years." At this the officer held my arm nearer to him in both his hands and told me, "Sir, I haven't said anything, you haven't heard anything!" I said reassuring him that when he had not say anything, there was no way I could have heard it.

He told my son that the papers were OK and he would recommend for isuing the passport. My son, then in the 3rd year of B.E. (Mechanical) had overheard my little talk with the officer, he was worried that the passport would be unduly delayed. But about a fortnight later he received the passport through Speed Post.

I am happy that I helped that officer revive somewhat his dead conscience.
