Refused bribe for not having bike papers
I'm a foreigner, was borrowing a friends bike, didn't know I needed to carry the registration papers. A traffic cop waved me over to join a few other drivers for random inspections. He accepted my foreign drivers license, but got angry when I did not have the papers.
He insisted that I pay 500 Rs. I said "I thought the bribe was only 100 Rs?" He said, "500".
Me: But I don't have 500.
Him: You have an ATM card?
Me: No, I left it at home.
Him: OK, you pay 300.
Me: I need a receipt.
He shouts something in Telugu to his superior officer, who motions with his hand that I should go.
Me: Ah, he says I can go.
Him: No, you must pay 300 Rs.
Me: Fine, but I need a receipt.
He sends me over to the superior officer who takes my license, starts writing me a receipt.
2nd officer: you give me 300 Rs.
Me: OK, but show me the written rule where it says I must pay 300.
Him: Talks to truck driver who is presenting paper.
Him: How much will you pay?
Me: Nothing, unless you show me the written rules.
He talks to other people, 3 minutes pass.
He looks at me, aggressively motions for me to leave with his hand.
I go back to my bike and drive away, as the other policemen pull over 2 bikes and 1 scooter.
Went home, got my camera, took photos of them, including the license plate of the nearby traffic police car.
