Say no to passport verification bribe
I had to renew my passport. I gave the application myself at the passport office on Senapati ********** Road. All the papers were in order since it was just renewal of passport. After about 20 days I received a call from Deccan Police Station for passport verification. I went for the interview in the morning. The interview went ok. Then a police constable said he would have to come to my house to confirm that I lived there. I took him to my home on my motorcycle. He just entered my home (my mom and dad were also present) and said everything was fine and I could drop him back to the police station. On the way back, he mentioned that all the papers were in order and that now I just had to "ensure that they were not held up unnecessarily at the police station". I pretended that I was too dumb to understand what he was saying. I just dropped him at the station asked him if I had to do anything more, he said no and I went home. I received my passport after 15 more days. The surname column was blank and the name column had the full name including the surname, but I feel it had more to do with the incompetence of the passport office rather than the folks at the police station! I have since used that passport for overseas travel without any problems.
