Was asked to pay, but when protested cop backed off

Reported on August 4, 2013 from Ghaziabad , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #35083

Was returning home this evening on NH-24 coming back into Delhi. At a traffic light the traffic started backing up. I had passed the middle of the intersection when the light turned red and then slowly dispersed.

Three cops were on the side of the road and one of them motioned for me to stop. Came over to me smilingly and said that I had run the red light. I protested vehemently and pointed out to them that the eating carts parked by the side of the road (under their nose, and probably by paying a bribe too) were blocking the road and traffic. I also said that they could write me a ticket if they wanted to and I would then put up my case in court. They finally backed off - and quietly let me go.

I only wish they could be made to understand how they should act - and not try and continue to harass the general public.
