Reported on August 23, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #34071

The word Khata is an urdu term for an Account. Every local government, such as a Municipality, keeps a record of its property tax payers, in a property list. A Khata is an entry in this record. You can read more about Khatas on our FAQs. I do not understand how anybody can tell you that there is a fake khata. Please get these details in writing from the official concerned, if required under the Right to Information Act.

There is a lot of confusion regarding Khata issue to flat owners. We are also consulting lawyers and others in the know in the BBMP, to come out with a clear set of clarifications regarding Khatas. There is a recent judgment of the High Court of Karnataka also regarding this issue, which we are obtaining and interpreting for all of you. On your part, please do not go by what the authorities say. Saying something has no value. Please go through the Khata FAQs and file your application. If they refuse orally, or refuse to take the application, ask them for an instruction in writing. If they still continue to refuse, file an RTI application. To properly pin them down, Please ask three questions in your RTI application. First, ask for the details of all the Khatas issued in your building. Second ask under what rule Khatas were given to all of them. Third, ask under what rule or instruction a Khata cannot be given to you.
Many middlemen might try to mislead you. Do not go by hearsay. And do not pay a bribe under any circumstances.
