I want to get my khata transfered, what do i do,how bribe I shall have to pay.

Reported on November 15, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka ι Report #33953

Do not pay bribes for Khatas. Please remember that it is not as important a document as it is made out to be. It is only an entry of the property owners details in the records of the Corporation/Municipality or the Gram Panchayat. The Khatha register is an important document that contains brief details of the property, the estimated property tax and other cesses payable on the property and the property tax and cesses collected every year. It is therefore an account of a person who has property in the city, as also an account of assessment of property owners within the Corporation’s jurisdiction.

Please go through the Khata FAQs and file your application. If BBMP authorities refuse orally, or refuse to take the application, ask them for an instruction in writing. If they still continue to refuse, file an RTI application ask under what rule or instruction a Khata cannot be given to you. Many middlemen might try to mislead you. Do not go by hearsay. And do not pay a bribe under any circumstances.

Please also note that residents of Rajarajeswari Nagar recently conducted a successful gandhigiri campaign and forced the BBMP to issue Khathas to more than 800 residents. You can read more about this effort at the following url.
