To verify the passport address, Police charge 500 -1000 Rs and i guess it is known to every citizen. What we can do about it? How can we deny them paying money?

Please visit the website of the Ministry of External affairs at

Here the details of how the passport is to be obtained is given in great detail. The status of your application can also be checked there. There is also a Tatkal scheme under which you can fast track your passport application. No bribe is to be paid. Just pay the renewal fee at the passport office.

In case you are asked for a bribe, I would suggest that you make a written complaint about this case to the vigilance authorities mentioned in the website. Please also file an RTI application with the Passport office to find out what has happened to your application. Please mention to the police that you know your rights and that you will complain to higher authorities if they demand a bribe. There are several instances reported in our -I didnt pay a bribe section where citizens have successfully resisted demands for bribes for the issue of passports and for the police verification. It is only if we stand up and be firm about not paying a bribe, that things will change.

If you read the I didn't pay bribes section, you will see many cases where people have successfully resisted paying a bribe to the police for demanding bribes for police verification.
