300 to the govt. coffer, 600 to the cops' pocket!

Reported on September 18, 2011 from Faridabad , Haryana  ι Report #3871

Flagged down for overspeeding. Was driving at 70 on a 50 km/h road. Sensing an opportunity since I was from Meghalaya and was in a ML registered vehicle, the cop wanted to see my car papers. All were in order but since we don't have PUC checks in Shillong, I did not have that. Moreover, I was of the opinion that upon purchase of a new vehicle, the PUC is initially valid for 1 year from the date of purchase/registration. The cop informed me that it was only for 6 months. So he decided to fine me. 300/- for overpeeding. 600/- for PUC. 500/- for something he made up related to lack of original documents which incidentally, I did have in original.

I was running short of cash and wanted to save as much as possible and so requested the cop to fine me but let me off for the PUC since I was from a state where PUC checks were not done. There were 3 cops who sensed an opportunity and discounted the PUC fine. He handed over a challan for Rs. 300/- towards overspeeding but took Rs. 900/- from me. I had no other option and had to give in.
