At the airport
At the airport on the way back from outside India wanting to avoid unnecessary harassment by the customs I paid a bribe of 500 rs. (The person wanted 20 USD). Even though I had nothing to declare I had a camera that I had taken from India and this could have been used to harass me to wheedle some more money out of me. I saw this happening to one guy on the way out. He was been hassled by the police at the exit. They are supposed to be guarding your safety but they use this opportunity to fleece you. Twice when I have carried goods with high worth I have paid the duty and have come in. The time it takes to pay the duty ranges anywhere from 2 to 4 hours. The second time I came in although I declared everything the office opened up all the bags and questioned me about every item that was there in the bag. Although he could see that the camera was old he wanted to charge. The first time I started paying I overheard two officers speak and say "We are seeing this form after a long time". The second time the officers were saying "Does he have the money to pay for the duty?" and the other one replied "Looks like he has and looks like he will pay". God knows when we will be declare anything that we have brought and be free of harassment from these crass individuals.
