A policeman was at our door this morning looking for my mother. She had applied for passport 3 weeks back and the online status of her passport was " pending police verification". So we were expecting some police to visit us. When we spoke to him he gave the cell phone number of another SI in the local police station and asked us to visit the station for address verification. We were surprised as the verification is usually done byythe visiting police itself. That's what happened when I got my passport. Nevertheless we called the SI and he asked to visit the station with rating card , passport sized photo etc. My mother and I took all the documents and went to the concerned police station and met the SI. After a wait we met the SI and showed the documents. He did not even bother about the documents.he asked my mother who is living abroad for her to visit.I said that I live in the U.S. and she will be visiting me . He asked us if we paid any money to the other police ********** who visited our house. We said " no"..he immediately asked us to give money and we did not know what to say . my mother is very old and has dexterity problems and I am leaving the country in 2 days. I didn't want to trouble her further by not paying money and putting her into trouble. So I paid Rs. 100 and he asked for 100 more.so we paid a total of Rs.200 and then he gave us two papers in which we had to get the signature of the two people mentioned for address verification and come and hand over to him again. He did not move from his place , got Rs.200 from us and on top of these made us roam again and again to the station for verification. This is so appalling. Is not it his duty to visit the concerned houses and get the signatures for verification ??
I feel bad about myself for having paid this bribe but could not help it that time.
