"Bakshish" for Passport Verification

Reported on May 9, 2011 from Gurgaon , Haryana  ι Report #8686

I received a call from police station to come for verification for passport. As instructed, I submitted identity proof of two neighbors who endorsed my credentials, and got their signature on the handwritten verification form.

After submitting all documents, I was about to leave the police station, when the sub-inspector asked me to pay some "bakshish" for the "munshis". I has to shell out 300 Rs. as I didn't have more in my wallet. He insisted that I may be called by vigilance officials about giving a bribe, and only if I intend not to disclose it, should I pay. However, I was not sure if he will not screw my verification report if I refused to pay the bribe. Therefore, I complied with his demand.
