Bribe asked for bringing LED TV which was below allowed limit of Rs. 25,000

Reported on March 6, 2013 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #34248

I was bringing in a 32 inch LED TV from Samsung which costed me Rs. 23,000 when converted to Indian currency. This TV was purchased in Indonesia and I had shop printed bill. I tried to pass through green channel as I was well within Rs. 25,000 limit allowed at that time.
I was forced to come to Red channel and the official started asking me questions about others things I have brought in. I was not carrying anything else bought outside India. The official opened my bag and check each and every part of it which was really pathetic.
Then I was aasked to settle with a bribe of Rs. 1,000. Even though I had the bill, official was not ready to see that and I was left only after paying rs. 1,000. I was told to pay this to another person with whom I was taken to another room behind customs check.

When leaving India customs official sitting before security check tell you that evaluation will be done based on bill/receipt of the product. If its inside free allowance, no customs will be charged. But when you are exiting the airport, customs officials are greedy and want bribes and trouble everyone.
