Bribe for being the victim of an Auto Accident

While driving from Mysore to Bangalore, I was rear ended by another car because of which my car was badly damaged and had to be taken to the Police Station after the police showed up at the accident location. Although a constable helped me to complete the FIR and settlement was agreed between me and the other driver, I was harassed by the police chief at the station who was bold enough to ask me that the minimum amount he accepted was Rupees 1,000. I managed to leave the station quitely but was afraid that the police would come after me for not paying them off. The police instead of protecting and enforcing the law, indulge in such harrassment for bribe.
