Bribe for issuance of passport

Reported on June 19, 2011 from Tiruchirappalli , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #7110

As a citizen of India, I knew that I had to pay bribe in order to get anything done, or rather shall I say, to get things moving.I had applied for passport in September in my college days. I was summoned by a local police station for the police verification. As I am from bihar, I knew what the protocol was in order to get things done quickly. So I went to the police station expecting around 500 to be charged by the officer. There were 2 police officers there. After one of them did the usual enquiry , the tricky part came. I knew I had to pay him but he was not saying anything. The other officer signaled me to pay him but I didn't want to pay as he had not asked for it(thinking that he might be an honest cop).I was about to leave but then I realized the trouble one has to go through in getting the passport on time. So finally I decided to pay him 100 in order to not take chances. The funny part comes now. I was the first guy from my college to be called there. Every student who there subsequently was asked to pay a minimum of 150 by that police officer himself!! I just set a precedent for taking bribe !!!!
