It is a shame to tell about Air India the national carieer incident and equally shamefull about their Employees and there behaviour on my first round trip from U.S.
I travelled from U.S to india in May 30 ,1998 by Air India from JFK,NY.While returning back i was slightly overweight in one of the bags and less on the other bags.The Clerk in the Counter told me to keep the weight the same across all bags which i did, but it took sometime to do this.While coming back to the counter he said that all the seats are gone for that flight and that he will have to pay 100 dollars for each of the seat.I did argue with him but in vain.My Wife started crying and pleaded him and said that we have already called and confirmed our booking.
I told the clerk that can i talk to your supervisor, then he got angry on this and said that i will personally see that u will not go on this flight.
I finally pleaded him and told him that i have to go on this flight as i have join my job.To my surprise he asked my wife how much dollars u have.My wife being deseperate told him $50 and then he asked me how much rupees u have.Then he told my wife that i will give u the seat but not your husband .I was usrprised on this .My wife pleaded him again for my seat .He then asked me how much money u have .I told him Rs 500 .He said OK enclose all these money in the passport and give it to me .After receiving the money he gave a seat in smoking area and had already assigned my wife a non-smoking area seat .Me and my wife travelled that flight sitting on seperate seat.
This has been a nightmare experience for me and my wife .After that we have not travelled on Air india flight ever.
I was nationalist at heart but this experience has jolted my fundamental thinking and i now look at india in a different way.
I beleive that only when India will focus on grassroots issues and localise the administratrion and bright educate and literate people who will have national pride in working will then we progress.
