Cheap Customs Inspector

Reported on February 22, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #28361

From a list of 134 books and magazines that we imported from the US, we provided correct documentation - an invoice detailing items and their corresponding rates and a packing list - which correctly listed out multiple copies, wherever there were any.

Now, my company has been doing this for the last 3 years and never once have we faced a problem like this before - primarily because books and magazines are 100% exempt from import duty. This time, a customs inspector told us that the numbers are not tallying, when they actually were. When we objected, stating that our documentation was 100% accurate, he demanded a bribe of Rs. 500/- to "clear" the mistake we made.
