The End of the month Saga

Reported on September 26, 2010 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #30652

Hello, I am from the awesome city of chennai. This awesomeness of the city is almost always put in the shadows during month ends when the traffic police gets ultra randy for money. You can see that the traffic police always appears to be "extra alert" when the calendar counts down to the end of a month. This, though by itself is not bad, it becomes a bad thing when people are caught and accused of making a violation just for the sake of money collection. This happened to me when I was driving my two wheeler along a road in anna nagar. I wanted tp get to a shop on the other side, so on reaching the nearest allowed U-Turn, I made a turn and proceeded towards the shop I wanted to go. Just before I reached the shop, I saw that there were some 2-3 traffic police officers flagging random people to stop. I was among the unlucky ones. The first question I got asked was: "How much money do you have on you boy?". Instead of answering that, I went on to ask what I did wrong.Wrong move. I should have lied that I had only 50 rupees on my and I need some for petrol. That usually works with such policemen who, if compassionate enough take 30 rupees and then allow you to proceed with the remaining 20. But in my mood to be all righteous and virtuous, I had asked him what I did wrong. He answered that I had CROSSED OVER THE DIVIDER. I was shocked and proceeded to tell him that my friend was proof that I did not cross over the divider. Then he said: "IF YOU DID NOT CROSS OVER THE DIVIDER, YOU OVERSPED OR DROVE THE WRONG WAY". That was enough to indicate to us what was needed to be done. He then said that they could confiscate our vehicle and fine us 1000 rupees or we could pay him a small amount and be on our way. Being in the hurry that we were, we proceeded to tell him that we have only 100 rupees each. He hen told us to pay him that and be on our way- No challans/receipts- obviously. So we paid Rs.200, and went off on our way and since that day we have not a pinch of belief in the traffic police system, especially during the "end of the month". Cheers
