I was travelling with my 3 year old daughter from India to North America. It was the last day of my visa expiry and within bounds of my legal stay. The officer (chief immigration officer of Mumbai airport). He made my life so bad that I had to pump bribe to take the flight. He saw my valunerability with the child in hand and he snapped. Folks this website is a great start but curruption is a cancer and is endemic. Being a Banker in the west, I could tell you that the half billion dollar figure is joke: its three to four times that. Keep up the good work. Oh, I have now decided to milk every indian govenment official at every opportunity I get!
