Fraudulent emissions report...

Reported on November 18, 2010 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #29892

One traffic inspector with his car well hidden stopped my 2-year old scooter (Honda Dio) and told me that he needed to check the emissions. One of his sidekicks plumbed the exhaust to a rather fancy looking gadget. My scooter was asked to be parked in front of the police vehicle while the computer that was supposed to give out the reading was inside the vehicle. I was asked to start up the scooter and rev it which I did. The cop inside the police vehicle asked me turn of the engine and asked me to come over. He showed me an 'Invalid Input' message box on the software that was supposed to give out the readings. When I told him that this was not a reading at all, he told me that this message shows up when the reading is above the acceptable limits. I asked him what the reading was but he refused to run the tests while I was watching his screen. He threatened me that he would confiscate my vehicle and that I can claim it at a station the next day after appearing before a judge. He told me that the judge will charge anything upto Rs.2000. Since I could not trust him with the vehicle, I settled for an amount of Rs.400 as bribe after which he let me go.
