A grand for a sign.

Reported on December 2, 2010 from Chennai , Tamil Nadu  ι Report #29633

Hi,

First off, congratulations on your endeavor towards bringing in (hopefully)a more earnest and responsible governance. i had never had any run-ins with greedy government officials and hence led a happily ignorant and simple life, till recently . I had to procure a Legal Heir Certificate as we had to transfer funds from my deceased father's bank account. I cannot recount the following experience with enough bitterness. The officials at the tahsildar's office just wouldn't move their butts and my already distressed mum would have to go and stand at that office (on the instruction of the officers)day in and day out just so she can get the certificate, wrap up all the legal work and move on with her life. But the govt officials seem to think what's the fun in working promptly and not seeing the regular citizen reach a point of absolute desperation and plain fatigue? Everyone at that office, from the clerks to the literate fools behind the desks had their fun with us, denying they ever called us at the time when we went to see them and putting up more such silly and infuriating gimmicks. Then after a distressingly long 7 months since we filed for the LHC, we gave in and asked the disgustingly relieving question, "But there must be something we can do to speed things up a bit?". and that something turned out to be a crisp, delightfully pink 1000 rupee note. We collected the LHC the very next day.
What is shocking about this incident was not the amount I paid in bribe. It was the insensitivity with which my mum was treated. is there no goodwill anymore? does no one think anything of adding to the misery of a bereaving woman (or man, of course)? What IS the deal with making an individual go through such indignity at the hands of utterly useless and incapable strangers in a govt building? It is extremely infuriating and even scary to imagine what these guys would do (or not do)to make you sweat and milk that 100 or 500 from you.

All that said, here's to honesty and sincerity.
Please do not slump in your efforts. I for one, will be an active supporter of this initiative. All the best to *******
