Once I had the misfortune of requesting a retired government secretary to join my idealistic venture. I respected his mind, experience and humor. And I came to regret it as if you did not follow his subtle hints, you had he'll to pay and nowhere to complain.
Gave him a secretary recruited through a known staffing service. She turned out to be a young, good looking girl and one day the retired secretary had her sitting on his lap.
A few weeks later I had to request that she needed some money and it should be paid. I requested justifying it. He did not. After a month I got a request from him to pay Rs 5 Laius. I again a requested a justification. Neither came my way.
Shortly thereafter both resigned. Then suddenly I learnt that the girl had gone and complained against me. There was no way but to engage a lawyer. Over the next several years the lawyer cost me more than Rs 10 Lakhs and specifically took sums twos pay the public prosecutor and the judge so as I will not be called to the court.
Finally one day he said that I will have to appear at least once. I said fine and went along. Fortunately the secretary's PA was there in the court. When the judge asked the details, she fumbled. The judge asked what did she want. She said 40000 rupees as the pending bonus. The judge asked me if I would give that and gave me a look that said don't be a fool, this is your chance.. I agreed. The case was dismissed.
But the whole process showed the nexus between the lawyer, the prosecutor, the judge where the lawyer does a favor to his client and takes the money to pass it on to the others. The lawyers fee was about Rs 5 Lakhs and he claimed to have taken the other Rs 5 Lakhs for bribing the prosecutor and the judge. The court staff was a minor matter.. About Rs 1000 per day when the exemption was granted from appearing in the court.
That was a lot less than Lalu ********** reputedly paid through a lawyer who I am told is an important cabinet minister now.. JustbRs 5 frites to get out.. But we had earned the money.. I just made a mistake of buying an ornament called retired secretary to the government of India.. No business gains because of him.. Just extra payouts..
So Those who run the system, know how to extract their pound of flesh.. Even when there is not much flesh to go around..
