My parents, strangers, everyone advised me to pay a bribe. There was police inspection at my own home, looking at my mother's government service background the inspector didnt demand any bribe, I did not pay him because of my true determination against corruption. However, for the police station, I was clearly instructed by my parents to pay the bribe at least if demanded upfront. When I went to the police station, while waiting in the line for a long time, I noticed such a variety of stories unfold regarding various cases going on in the police station.. I gasped at the power that lies in the mere will of a police officer..
In that light, when I entered the cabin of the police officer, i simply acted ignorant at all his hints for a bribe.. However, at the end, he weirdly made 2 with his fingers, and said two hundred.. I could no more act innocent, and immediately acted as if just realizing and gave him the money..
I felt really bad, but found it difficult to stand up against a police officer, specially when there was a convenient way out possible for me..
I have dedicated myself to social work, and aim to change the situation of our country..
But I also couldn't see refusing bribe to the police officer there bringing about much of a positive difference..
I find the tips here on this website useful in demonstrating one's confidence to any official and to deter them from demanding bribes..
