" This is my first bribe and i want it to be my last"

Reported on January 16, 2013 from Kolkata , West Bengal  ι Report #100

Yesterday, i was returning back to Nepal via India after a short lived road trip with a group of friends to Bangladesh. All except me had the required travel permits to Bangladesh so i made a snap decision to go back to Nepal, although visiting Darjeeling was a cooler option. I took a bus back to the Mechi bridge border and then checked-out of the world's largest democracy. On my way to the bridge, i was stopped by a group of armed border security personal for "some procedures". First, they asked me for my passport and then for my bag. One of them started sharing me a situation when they found a student with dynamites and that it was important to make random checks like the one i was facing. After searching my personal belongings for about 5 minutes and staring at me for sometime, they asked me for bills of my laptop and camera. My initial thought was "Why would an armed border security personal ask for the cost of my personal belongings?". With a friendly grin on my face, I denied having any form of receipt and said "Who carries receipt of everything one owns?". Then, i was abruptly asked to pay Rs. 500.
