Nepal India Border Officials are the most corrupt in India

Reported on August 20, 2011 from Gorakhpur , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #4404

It was the story when I was a student in IIT/Roorkee. At the end of summer and winter vacation, I needed to go to Roorkee via Nau Tanaha, Gorakhpur, Lakhnau, then to Roorkee. In every 5 kilometer between Nepal-India Border and Gorakhpur town, the buses were stopped by Custom Officials and Police. They used to ask for money. Our group of students paid at least 1000 rupees in each pass to these individuals. The reason they asked the money was we were have some branded jacket, shirts, pants, and pens or some stationary.

The corruption did not stop at Gorakhpur, it continued to Lakhnau Railway. We used to pay at least 100 rupees (for the whole group of 6-7 students). In India, Nepali citizens have to pay more. Surprisingly, most Indian citizens were supporting the police and custom officials when they come to know that we were not Indians but Nepalis. A few educated people from large metros were not happy the way we were isolated and asked for higher amount as a bribe. It has to change. Indian public should change their thinking too, that we are all humans, no matter where we come from, and treat equally. Discrimination against Nepalis in India is another kind of problem India and Indians face. This movement will certainly help, but they need identify in public that Indians should not only speak against bribery within Indian community, but the bribery against people of other origin. I wish you all the best. The IPaidaBribe.com is a great move to achieve this goal.
