Due to extremely irregular and unpredictable family circumstances, property tax hadn't been paid since 2008-09. entire amount with fine came close to a lakh. since my brother and me were both in school, and my late dad took care of these issues, and the property was on loan, the assessor who knew of this situation from neighbors offered to close the deal at a total of 42000 rupees, with 25000 going into their pockets. 42k seemed a lot lesser than a lakh with annual education fees due that month, so we decided to take up the offer and paid the bribe.
