Paid bribe to admit my friend's sister-in-law

Reported on March 6, 2011 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #27552

I don't like to be a part of corruption and many times, I have tried to avoid being a part of corruption (or extend it any form). Being a normal Indian citizen, I know I cannot stop what politicians and leaders are doing now-a-day. Whether you talk about Mr. ********** or Mr. & Mrs. 2G scandals respected ladies/gentleman; everyone is involved in the corruption and it's regretful to see all this.
It has been 5+ years since I paid the last bribe and I am ashamed of doing this but it was not for my personal reason. I wanted to confess before I die… because I don’t want to die in pain of without confessing it. I know what I have done is wrong.... Even though, only purpose of doing this to save a year for someone life but again what is wrong is always remains the wrong....
One fine day my friend called me up and requested me - if I can go to XYZ university (I would not speak-out the university name as it will give a bad-name to this university) and ********** the university officials with ********** (his sister-in-law). This was regarding “late” admission to his sister-in-law. When I told him that I don't know any officials out there and what's purpose of going out there; he told me that I have to fill-out some forms and pay the bribe to university officers for ********** “late” admission. As she is a girl and being a girl she could not pay the bride… So to handle all this matter it requires an educated male personality. My friend thought that I would be appropriate of doing this. As I never said “No” to my friend and since I was confused about it – “If she will not get the admission this year, she had to lose her one year so, I said “Yes” to him“
When I reached university premises, I came to know that a lot of girls are like that and through various channels they have paid the bribe. I was literally shocked when I see the percentage of girls who were involved in paying bribes or willing to pay the bribes are far more higher than boys. It was like 80% girls who were either already paid the bribe or willing to pay the bribe to get the admission into the university. It was again shameful for me to being a part of it. It was like someone is dragging me or forcing me to being a part of it. I wish I would not have done this.
Later on, when I met university official and talked about her case. University officer started scolding and yelling at me and ********** (for being so late in getting admission). He yelled and screamed at us and finally in lower voice, he said let’s go to bank and get the forms. We all together went out and this university officer started asking me what I do, where I do work and what’s my profession and etc, etc. When we reached bank he asked me to fill-out all the forms and pay the bribe along with the form. Bank counter officer was aware about all this procedure and was very diligently sitting at his chair and watching all this happening. Once all the formalities have been done university officer asked us to leave and come again for Identity-Card and other stuffs….
After spending a whole day, I travelled in bus along with ********** and dropped her at her home. I felt like losing the confidence in what I was and what I am now… Sometime, you are confused between what you do and what you should NOT do and that’s what you call corruption…
