Paid a bribe for driving licence

Reported on June 6, 2011 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #7864

Paid Rs 500 to a transport official who was standing outside the centre. There was a large queue of people lining up to see him, holding application forms and the necessary bribe-money. My license was approved without taking a test and I also obtained an international licence on the back of it.

This is a crying shame. I was young- only 18 at the time and although I'd attending a local driving school, I would say that my driving skills were at best rudimentary- proved when I applied for a licence in Europe- I was told that I did not know how to drive. Driving is a privilage and more than that, a responsiblity; operating heavy machinery on public roads incorrectly can kill or seriously injure people, including yourself and your passengers. I spent considerable time learning how to drive in Europe and I am proud of my driving skills today, and as a matter of principle, refuse to utilise my Indian license, obtained using bribery, until the day comes when all liceses are revoked pending passing of a international-level test. I do hold on to it as proof of ID.

Shame, shame shame.
