This happened more than a decade ago but the disgusting episode is fresh in my mind.The police were delaying my police verification report for my passport.I was due to go abroad for further studies.I was not a local guy.I was just working in that place.The police inspector demanded me to show a ration card just to extract a bribe from me. I tried everything i could to avoid paying a bribe including bringing influence from a retired ASP but in the end i had to go to the nanjamgud police inspectors house and pay him a bribe of around a 1500 rupees. I was so disgusted by the state of affairs in india that i swore that i would settle abroad and not come back to india.Now a decade later i am a citizen of Australia and even though there is a bit of racism here i would much rather go to an Australian police station than to go anywhere near an indian police station. My wife completely agrees with me and in fact she has gone by herself alone to the local australian police station a coupleof times for document attestation but she would be terrified to go to an indian police station. Indian police are nothing but goons in uniform.
