Paid bribe to retrieve items seized during traffic violation

Reported on July 16, 2016 from Korba , Chhattisgarh  ι Report #111344

My father with his colleague were heavily drunk (my father is an abusive alcoholic) and driving on a bike. They lost control and fell near the police station at CSEB Chowk, Korba. The police seized the vehicle along with my father's wallet, cash, mobile, and vehicle. They were kind enough to admit my father to hospital, and called us. Next day, I showed up at the police station with my relatives. They made a detailed report, got my signatures, and returned the wallet. My uncle, sensing the next step, gave Rs. 2000 to the newly appointed cop, who probably didn't know the bribe rates, and happily accepted the sum. About half an hour after we left, the same cop called us, saying his colleagues were getting angry on why I didn't take at least Rs. 10,000, and wanted us to come back and pay the rest. My uncle refused. The calls continued throughout the day, and in the end my uncle had to firmly ask the cops to stop calling us for more bribe.
