Paid to get work laptop back from Customs officer

Reported on February 23, 2011 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #28349

I work in Canada for a software company and I got a month's leave to go home. I brought my work laptop with all the development material with me so I could work and visit my family at the same time. The customs officer said I was not allowed to bring the laptop without paying duty because it was not a personal laptop. The laptop had the company logo on it. The laptop was taken from me and I told them that there was no way I was going to pay because it is legal to bring one laptop. I ultimately had to pay them because of all the information and confidential stuff on the laptop. I know the information on the laptop was not going go be of any use to them but I couldn't just risk leaving it.

Next time I go I will take the hard drive out before the plane lands and then they can keep the laptop if they want. I have also installed biometric security on the laptop which will make it useless for them if they keep it. All hail technology.
