Passport verification bribe

Reported on November 20, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #29847

I applied for a passport renewal and was called to the police station for verification. Apparently the hawaldar came to my house when I was not at home and asked for me to appear in person at the police station. In the police station the person in charge of verification sent me back 3 times home asking for numerous documents. Everytime I went home and came back he would ask me for another document. Finally I got fed up and showed him that I was angry. When he saw this he quickly took the papers provided to him and told me that my work will be done. When I was leaving the police station this person opened the desk drawer in front of him, smiled and asked me for 'Some compliments'. He told me that the police station had incurred expense in sending the hawaldar to my house. I understood this as a bribe and put Rs 100 in his drawer. I asked him if the compliment was enough and he smiled and shook his head.
