Police brutality in Nairobi

Reported on April 2, 2013 from Gonda , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #34356

I was on holiday during the summer of 2012. I intended to stay in Mombasa for the whole time however, my cousins and I had decided to visit the capital for a week. One evening, we were in Eastleigh, 12th street, when 12 police officers had approached. 2 were aiming the rifles at me in order to intimidate. The leader approached me and made it clear that he knew we were foreigners and that he expected a 'gift'. I was planning on leaving the morning after and had only 8000 Ksh in my pocket which was intended to purchase a ticket back to Mombasa. I had pleaded with the officer and told him I had no money. He refused and said that if his men were not satisfied with the money i provided, they would detain me in a cell for 72 hours. Furthermore, he jokingly said that each cell has "no toilets" and that they were meant to hold "12 men" but that this "is Africa, so we hold 29".

I was forced to pay.
