Special Marriage Act - Special Bribe

Reported on December 10, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #29261

The guy sitting at the registrar office demanded Rs.500 bribe in front of the crowded public. I do not remember the exact fee but I had given him at least Rs. 50 more than the fee amount as I did not have change and he said "Give me Rs. 500. This is a special marriage registration" I replied saying, I have given you more than the fee and I pulled out my wallet (which luckily was EMPTY) at that point and displayed it wide open in PUBLIC mentioning "look that is all I had". To my surprise, this guy calls out to the next table officer (PUBLICLY AND CLEARLY) mocking at my guester saying "he says he doesnot have Rs. 500). To my luck, I had already collected all certificate copies in original before we ensued this discussion so I could get away with just that much. But I did observe many who just payed Rs. 500 for the Special Marriage. Please dont thing it is in anyway SPECIAL. This is just a term that is used to define marriage in our LAW.

A marriage which has already been solemnised can be registered either under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 or under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable in cases where both husband and wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs or where they have converted into any of these religions. Where either of the husband or wife or both are not Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs, the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

Further, marriage can be solemnised between any two persons under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954.
