I had my passport renewal and the police person came in for verification. He insisted to submit the documents required at the station the next day during a time frame. Once I completed all the documentation, and was about to leave he asked for "chai pani" which I offered Rs. 200. It seems the standard rate for passport verification was Rs. 500 after paying which I was given the confirmation number and took me to the Incharge for final signature.
Similar situation happened for my baby(7 month old) as well. It was a new application. Unfortunately (or may be fortunately), I was held up in office meetings during the time frames he suggested and ended up not paying anything eventhough the cop called me multiple times. He had to send the papers and I ended up not paying any money though.
