The first bribe I paid in my life

The incident happened 4 years ago when I was in class XIIth. I know neither the name of the person nor his designation. He came to my house for verification against my application of a passport. Once the verification was done the person asked for 'jal-pani' in a very natural voice: "Beta, would u plz give me something to have sweets for my family?" Sensing his inclination I said: "I don't have money to give you. Even if I had, I would not like to give you." Then he took out my papers and showed them to me saying, "If you give Rs.1000, you shall get passport within 1 month. For Rs.500, 2 months. If you don't pay, God knows if you shall get that at all. You said you are applying for studying abroad. Now you decide." I didn't have courage to take risk. Therefore, I paid bribe borrowing money from my neighbour.
I understand that I could not provide enough details for action to be taken against the guilty person. Yet I am feeling happy to share my experience here. Thank you for this initiative. India need more such efforts to prosper.
