Tip of huge iceberg

Reported on December 2, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #29637

For every new property that is registered in Sahakar Nagar Sub-registrars office, a bribe of Rs. 15000 is demanded. The money is handed over to a middleman who is not a government employee, and only then is the registration process completed. In this case, it is not even possible to pin-point the person who accepted the bribe because he is faceless. However, the amounts that are taken add up to huge totals. Even if 10 properties are registered every day in Sahakar Nagar alone, that is 1.5 lakhs per day. For 20 working days of the month, the amount adds up to 3 crores. That is bribe income just from ONE sub-registrar office in Bangalore. How many offices in total in Bangalore? Do the math, and the figures will be mind boggling.
