Traffic police-Bribe-Front and back name plate fonts do not match

Though this was over an year ago, I always felt ashamed on how policeman can make us do something which we know is wrong.
I was once stopped by a policeman at nalgonda x roads, hyderabad and he asked me for all my car papers. When he realized i had all the documents, he noticed that my car's front and back name plates had different font(both had white background with medium black letters, but with different font). He said that was wrong and told me to give him Rs.100, else take a challan for Rs.500.
When i heard that, i was surprised that such a rule exists and was not believing him. But he was not even listening to me and when i gave him rs.100 he let me pass.
