Traffic Policeman took money, threatening to make me sit in station for the whole day

Reported on November 16, 2010 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #29946

Today me on my way to office, through my regular route on regular time, traffic policeman stopped me in front of Kadugodi police station (near Whitefield, Bangalore) and asked for my license and other documents related to my vehicle. I can see he was stopping as much vehicles as he can manage and checking their documents.
I presented him all documents of my vehicle, which was up to **********. He looked at my insurance and said ‘this looks like manipulated’. It was having some ink marks on couple of places due to the poor quality of printing.
I suggested him that it’s not a forgery and this was printed by the insurance office in front of me. He did not want to listen, but suggested ‘this requires you to pay Rs.500 as fine, so pay me 300 and go’. I was not OK with this but as he was not available for reasoning, I choose to pay the fine as per rule and get a receipt. When I informed him that I will pay the actual fine and take the receipt, he threatened me of charging me with forgery of document and making me sit in police station for the whole day. Also commented ‘Rs.300 is very less compared to what you lose if you take one day leave, so pay Rs.300 or be ready to stay back in station for the whole day’.
As I was not ready to stay back in police station for the whole day (None of the office going crowd will be) I paid him Rs.300 and moved on.
He also gave me an advice while I was leaving, ‘Please don’t do this again sir. When police man asks for money, pay him; do not try to reason with as we know all ways to make you pay’

This is not even bribe, its extrusion of money using authority
